OUR MISSION
Climate Legislation is Crucial. Here's Why.
Simply put, climate legislation helps ensure a prosperous and secure tomorrow for Indiana. PowerUP Indiana strives to provide information and resources to educate Hoosiers on the benefits of this initiative.
Why do we need change?
We need substantial climate change legislation to help achieve:
Security
America derives too much of our energy from fossil fuels, often from foreign countries that pose a threat to our national security. Clean energy ensures we derive energy from our natural resources. Also, climate change threatens to destabilize developing nations, creating conflicts over diminishing resources and mass migrations. This will further strain America's military and aid organizations' ability to respond to and mitigate these disasters.
Prosperity
While the number of traditional jobs has declined, "green" jobs have increased. Between 1998 and 2007, Indiana's clean energy jobs increased by 78 percent¹. Despite the recession, climate legislation will help small businesses invest in new technologies and methods that ultimately create new jobs.
Lasting Legacy
Climate legislation ensures our children and future generations can continue to enjoy and benefit from a healthy planet. Climate change threatens to disrupt Indiana's agriculture through rising temperatures that promote breeding of pests, and cause soil erosion through increased flooding and precipitation. Also, the EPA has determined that greenhouse gases "threaten the public health and welfare of the American people."² This legislation is an important step to reducing greenhouse gases and reversing the effects of global warming.
What can I do?
Passing this legislation is by no means assured. Powerful interest groups and lobbies are aligning against the measure. You need to contact your legislator and tell them you're committed to seeing climate legislation signed into law. This site provides resources to help in this effort.
Climate legislation is more important than ever. Don't wait to become a part of our push to ensure a prosperous and secure tomorrow for Indiana. Join us.
